How ADAO used AI to turn 20 years of research into immediate support for families in crisis

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) faced a critical challenge: while they had over 4,000 pages of research and 400+ educational videos, families urgently seeking help after asbestos exposure struggled to find timely, relevant answers.
In response, we developed “The Source”—an AI-powered assistant that delivers instant, accurate, and empathetic guidance based on ADAO’s extensive body of work. Available 24/7, the system empowers families to access expert information within minutes, without needing to sift through thousands of documents.
The impact
- 3x faster access to critical health information
Families now get reliable answers in minutes instead of hours of searching. - 24/7 support for urgent situations
The AI delivers immediate, expert-backed responses—regardless of time zone or business hours. - Scalable, zero-overhead service delivery
ADAO can now serve unlimited families while focusing staff efforts on research and advocacy.
The challenge
ADAO has spent two decades building one of the most authoritative repositories on asbestos-related illness—yet many visitors to the site couldn’t access the help they needed when it mattered most.
“Families would come to our site in crisis,” shared ADAO Co-Founder Linda Reinstein. “They were overwhelmed, scared, and unsure where to begin. We had the right information—but it was difficult to navigate when every minute felt critical.”
Visitors were often in urgent situations: discovering asbestos in their homes or workplaces, worried about their families’ safety, and unsure of the next steps. The existing site offered a vast array of resources—technical research, legal information, medical data—but wasn’t designed for high-stress, high-stakes decision-making by non-experts.
Adding to the complexity:
- The content was often written for researchers or policymakers.
- There were no live chat or hotline options available after hours.
- The organization didn’t have the capacity to offer real-time support without redirecting focus from its core mission.
The gap between having the answers and delivering them accessibly—especially in emotionally charged situations—meant families were left searching, second-guessing, and sometimes making unsafe decisions.
The solution
The goal wasn’t just to build a chatbot—it was to make life-saving knowledge accessible, understandable, and actionable for any person, at any time.
A tailored knowledge engine
We trained the AI on ADAO’s full library of research papers, educational videos, and advocacy materials. The system doesn’t simply surface keywords—it understands the context and intent behind each question, whether it’s “What should I do if there’s asbestos in my attic?” or “What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?”
Context-aware recommendations
Depending on the query, the AI connects users to the most relevant and authoritative resources: fact sheets, expert videos, next-step checklists, or legal support content. This ensures that users are not only informed—but guided.
Empathetic and clear communication
Every interaction was designed with tone in mind. The AI communicates with clarity and compassion, offering reassurance while delivering factual, actionable information. It recognizes that the people using it may be anxious, confused, or in distress.
24/7 availability
Whether someone is searching at 2 p.m. or 2 a.m., the system is available and consistent. This eliminates delays, avoids panic spirals, and helps people make safer decisions faster.
The results
The transformation in user experience was immediate and meaningful.
- Significantly faster access to critical information
Instead of navigating dense research archives, users now receive personalized responses instantly. One user shared, “I finally understand what this means for my family.” - Expanded accessibility and reach
Anyone, anywhere, can get trusted information—whether they live in a major city or rural area, regardless of the time of day. - Increased user confidence
Families who were once overwhelmed are now empowered to act. The system doesn't just provide data—it helps users understand and respond with clarity and confidence. - Scalable support without increased workload
ADAO’s staff can remain focused on advocacy and research, while the AI handles a growing volume of inquiries with no compromise on accuracy or empathy.
This wasn’t just an automation project—it was an extension of ADAO’s mission, now delivered at scale, on demand.
