So you're building an AI agent in Voiceflow and wondering "How do I write a good prompt?" Good news, you don't have to start from scratch or overthink it. Here's a simple 4-step method that works really well, even if you're new to prompting.

Step 1: Get clear on what your agent should do

Before jumping into prompt writing, ask yourself:

  • What exactly should the agent help with? (e.g. qualify leads, answer FAQs, create tickets)
  • What tone should it use? (e.g. casual, formal, friendly, upbeat)
  • Are there specific paths it should follow for certain user inputs?
  • How should it handle edge cases or “I don’t know” questions?
  • What kind of fallback responses should it give?

💡Tip: The more specific you are here, the better the prompt — and the better your agent will perform later on.

Step 2: Use AI to help you write the prompt

Instead of writing your prompt alone, let the AI help you. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or your LLM of choice, and paste this:

I'm building a conversational AI agent in Voiceflow. Can you help me write a clear, high-performing system prompt for the Agent step?‍

Here’s what I want the agent to do: [describe the task — e.g. qualify leads, answer FAQs, help users book demos, etc. Tell the agent if it should call a tool or follow a path for each task]

Include: tone, behavior guidelines, edge case handling, and sample inputs/responses.

This works way better than starting from a blank slate. After it outputs your prompt, feel free to edit it to your liking.

Step 3: Open Voiceflow and find the Agent step

Head to your project and drag in the Agent Step. Once you click on the prompt box, take the prompt you got from ChatGPT and paste it into the Agent Step.

And that's it.

You just upgraded your agent's brain in just a couple minutes. Congrats!
