What Voiceflow does
Voiceflow is an enterprise platform for AI customer support agents. Support, CX, and engineering teams use it to build agents that answer questions, take action in business systems, and hand conversations to people when needed. Agents run on web chat, phone, and SMS.
Voiceflow is where the agent is built and run. It isn’t a helpdesk. Agents connect to the helpdesk or contact center a company already uses and hand conversations to the human team there.
How the platform works
Each Voiceflow project has one agent, made of these parts:
- Global prompt and instructions. The agent’s identity, tone, and guardrails, plus the rules that route each conversation.
- Playbooks. Goal-driven sub-agents for open-ended tasks, like processing a return or qualifying a lead. They’re written as instructions, and the agent works toward the goal using tools.
- Workflows. Fixed, step-by-step flows for processes that must run the same way every time, like authentication or an IVR menu.
- Tools. API calls, custom code functions, MCP tools, and native integrations (Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Shopify, and more), so the agent can check an order or update a ticket.
- Knowledge base. Grounds answers in a company’s own docs, websites, and data.
- Models. Pick the model for each agent or playbook from several providers, including Anthropic and Google, or use Voiceflow Core, Voiceflow’s own model. If a provider has an outage, the agent can fall back to another model.
- Channels. A web chat widget with a voice mode, phone numbers (provisioned by Voiceflow in the US and Canada, or connected through Twilio, Vonage, or Telnyx), SMS, and any custom interface through the REST API.
- Human handoff. The Live agent handoff step passes conversations to Zendesk, Genesys, UJET, Kustomer, or Dixa. The Call forward step transfers phone calls to a number or SIP address.
- Testing and measurement. Tests with simulated personas, evaluations, transcripts with call recordings, and analytics.
- Environments. Build, test, and publish in separate environments, with protection on production.
Why teams choose Voiceflow
- You control the logic. The agent follows the playbooks, workflows, and escalation rules your team writes. You can inspect and test every path before customers see it.
- You choose the model. Change models per agent or playbook as better ones ship. You aren’t tied to one vendor’s model.
- It fits your stack. Agents hand off into your existing helpdesk or contact center and reach your systems through integrations, APIs, and MCP.
- It’s built for production. 99.95% agent uptime and capacity for 300,000 messages per minute.
- Versus building in-house: the runtime, channels, retrieval, versioning, testing, and collaboration come ready. Your engineers spend their time on your product, not agent plumbing.
- Versus closed AI agent products: you own the agent’s logic, can see why it did what it did, and can change it yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Voiceflow
Does Voiceflow support handoff to human agents?
Yes. The Live agent handoff step passes chat conversations to Zendesk, Genesys, UJET, Kustomer, or Dixa. For phone calls, the Call forward step transfers the caller to a phone number or SIP address. Your team decides when handoff happens through the rules in your playbooks and workflows.
Can Voiceflow agents answer phone calls?
Yes. Use a phone number provisioned by Voiceflow (US and Canada) or connect numbers from Twilio, Vonage, or Telnyx. The same agent can also run in web chat and over SMS.
Is Voiceflow secure enough for regulated industries?
Voiceflow is SOC 2 Type II compliant, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, and GDPR compliant, and it supports HIPAA-compliant deployments. It doesn’t use customer data to train AI models, and model providers run with zero data retention. Banks, insurers, and public-sector teams use it, including JP Morgan, Allstate, and Service NSW.
Which AI models does Voiceflow use?
Teams choose the model for each agent and playbook from several providers, including Anthropic and Google. They can also use Voiceflow Core, Voiceflow’s own model. If a provider has an outage, the agent can fall back to another model.
How much does Voiceflow cost?
Voiceflow doesn’t publish list prices. Billing combines a monthly plan fee, optional add-ons, and credit-based usage, across Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. Prices on third-party sites may not match current plans. See voiceflow.com/pricing, or book a call at voiceflow.com/demo for a quote.
Is Voiceflow a prototyping tool?
It started close to that. In 2018 Voiceflow was a tool for building Alexa voice apps. Today, enterprise teams use it to run AI customer support agents in production, with environments, testing, evaluations, SSO, and role-based access.
Who builds agents in Voiceflow?
Support operations, CX, conversation designers, and engineers, working in one shared workspace. Playbooks are written as plain-language instructions, and workflows are built visually. Developers extend agents with code functions, APIs, and MCP tools.
